Wessex Packaging publishes Plastic Packaging Tax white paper
Wessex Packaging has published a white paper on the Plastic Packaging Tax, ahead of its introduction next year.
Written to help manufacturing, logistics and supply chain operators understand the implications and opportunities that will arise from the new tax, Wessex’s white paper can be downloaded at wessexpkg.co.uk/plastictax. The Government is bringing in the Plastic Packaging Tax from 1st April 2022, and it will have implications across all sectors, industries, companies, and consumers in the UK.
In the white paper the team of experts at Wessex Packaging look at the background to the tax and recommend a seven-point action plan to help businesses to prepare for its introduction. The tax will apply to plastic packaging components manufactured or imported into the UK, that do not have a minimum 30% recycled content. Warehouse and logistics teams are encouraged to read the paper to understand the points at which plastic is used within the supply chain and identify areas where alternative materials can be used, or where plastic with a higher recycled content can have a place.
The use of pallet wrap film, for example, is often an overlooked use of plastic and can contribute to the plastic waste consumption figures. For companies who wrap pallets as part of their supply chain and logistics process, the opportunity exists to review the amount and type of pallet wrap that is used per pallet. As pallet wrap and load stability experts, Wessex also offer on-site pallet wrapping audits that often highlight areas where too thick a stretch film is being used; too much film is being used; or the wrapping process is wasteful.
Mark Barter, Wessex’s MD, says: “Our Plastic Packaging Tax white paper is an expert view on what is to come, and how it will impact the manufacturing, logistics and supply chain industries. We’re delighted that so many companies have asked for our advice ahead of the tax’s introduction next year, and it’s good to see they are understanding the implications and preparing themselves. The feedback we’re receiving is that being aware of the tax; reviewing current products and processes; and investigating alternative packaging options, is all good preparation.
We will also be informing our customers and updating our white paper, as and when the Government releases new information.”
